A leadership style is a leader’s style of providing direction,  implementing plans, and motivating people. There are six styles of leadership. Authoritarian leadership style often follows the vision of those that in  control. An authoritarian style of leadership may create a climate of fear. A  paternalistic leader takes care of his subordinates as a parent. In this style of  leadership the leader supplies complete concern for his workers. The workers who  follow paternalistic leadership have better organization skills. A democratic leader  shares the decision-making abilities with group members by practicing social  equality. Democratic leadership promotes better ideas and creative solutions to  problems. The laissez-faire leadership style is where all the rights and powers to  make decisions concerning the completion of their work are fully given to the  workers. The laissez-faire leader supports workers to accomplish their goals.  Transactional leaders focus their leadership on motivating followers through a  system of rewards and punishments. It guarantees increase in productivity. A  transformational leader transforms his or her followers’ needs and redirects their  thinking. Q. 3 B) 4 marks Summary Writing

Q. 3 (B) Read the first activity, the extract and then do all the activities. [12 marks]

The present human resources minister is concerned with the high rate of  ‘dropouts’ in schools. The heart of the matter has, unfortunately, not been  addressed by the various commissions that have delved into the subject. As an  educationist for more than 40 years, I’ve closely watched the state of education at  all levels, be it the primary, the secondary or the university level.

What struck me as an inescapable reality during the last 20 years is  that in a large number of schools, established in unapproachable villages and  tracts, the teachers are commuters, many of whom have to travel up to 200 kms. to reach their schools. Given the available means of transport, the in clemencies of  weather, and the deplorable condition of the road one can very well imagine how  impossible it is for the teacher to reach his school. Moreover 80 per cent of the  primary schools in India are single teacher schools.

Therefore, in reality the teacher does not 'drop in' for more than two  or three days in a month. His salary is ensured as he has a good 'understanding'  with the Sarpanch and block development officer of that area. If we can ensure  that teachers 'drop in’ when they are expected to, the 'dropout' rate will be  reduced considerably.

(B) Write a summary of above passage pointing out the problems in education  in villages and suggest a suitable title. (4Marks)

Answers:-

SCHOOL DROPOUTS

Village schools face the problem of dropouts. This is because teachers  hardly attend the school. Having an understanding with the Sarpanch and block  development officer, they are sure of receiving their salaries. Most of the teachers  have to travel long distances to reach their schools. They face problems such as  lack of transport, in clemencies of weather and deplorable condition of the roads.  If teachers could be persuaded to take classes regularly, the 'drop out' rate would  decrease.

Q. 3 B) Read the first activity, read the extract and then do all the activities. Most of the water in the soil is rain water and theoretically it should be as pure as  distilled water. Fortunately, however, this is usually not the case, for plants need not only water  to live, but also minerals – vital salts which are liberated during the decomposition of rock and  soil. This decomposition is a continuous process and proceeds fastest at high temperature. When there is plenty of rain, most of the salts produced by decomposition are washed away  into streams and rivers, and a proper mineral balance is maintained.

The salt concentration in the ocean is also high and very few land plants grow in sea  water. Most plants which grow on beaches, such as the coconut palm, actually live on fresh  water, paradoxical though this may seem. The seashore may be their habitat because the ocean  currents will distribute their seeds, the coconuts, but they can no more live on salt water than  any other plant. In fact, their roots do not reach sea water, but only go down to the fresh water  which, being lighter than the salt, floats on top of it. Thus, when it rains on the sandy tropical  beaches, the rain water raises the water table in the sand, forcing the salt water downward and  outward.

THE GROWTH OF PLANTS

In the garden close by grew many large and magnificent flowers, and,  strange to say, the less fragrance they had the haughtier and prouder they were.  The peonies puffed themselves up in order to be larger than the roses, but size is  not everything! The tulips had the finest colours, and they knew it well, too, for  they were standing bolt upright like candles, that one might see them the better.  In their pride they did not see the little daisy, which looked over to them and  thought, "How rich and beautiful they are ! I am sure the pretty bird will fly down  and call upon them. Thank God, that I stand so near and can at least see all the  splendor.” And while the daisy was still thinking, the lark came flying down,  crying “Tweet,” but not to the peonies and tulips -no, into the grass to the poor  daisy. Its joy was so great that it did not know what to think. The little bird  hopped round it and sang, “How beautifully soft the grass is, and what a lovely  little flower with its golden heart and silver dress is growing here.” The yellow  center in the daisy did indeed look like gold, while the little petals shone as  brightly as silver. How happy the daisy was! No one has the least idea. The bird  kissed it with its beak, sang to it, and then rose again up to the blue sky.

The lark excited flew up towards its beloved. The sweet odour and beauty of  daisy was irresistible. It returned. Gazed at daisy. They nodded at each other.  Lark rubbed its cheek against daisy’s petals. The flower, overcome by shyness,  started dew drops. Happily the lark flew away.

Q. 5 (B) Dialogue Writing 4 marks

Steps in Developing Conversation Skill:-

1) Good morning, Hello, Hi, How do you do?

2) Good bye, Bye –

3) Somebody wants to speak to a person who is busy in work should be said  ‘Excuse me’ and then speak

4) Use ‘Thank you’ for gratitude ‘Sorry’ for something improper.

5) Well, fine, very good, how nice! Splendid, OK, my God, good heavens.

For example:-

“I wish I could console the poor lark,’’ thought the daisy. It could not move  one of its leaves, but the fragrance of its delicate petals steamed forth, and was  much stronger than such flowers usually have; the bird noticed it, although it was  dying with thirst, and in its pain tore up the green blades of grass, but did not  touch the flower.

The evening came, and nobody appeared to bring the poor bird a drop of  water; it opened its beautiful wings, and fluttered about in its anguish; a faint and  mournful “Tweet, tweet,” was all it could utter, then it bent its little head towards  the flower, and its heart broke for want and longing. The flower could not, as on  the previous evening, fold up its petals and sleep; it dropped sorrowfully. The boys  only came the next morning; when they saw the dead bird, they began to cry

bitterly, dug a nice grave for it, and adorned it with flowers. The bird’s body was  placed in a pretty red box; they wished to bury it with royal honors. While it was  alive and sang they forgot it, and let it suffer want in the cage; now, they carried  over it and covered it with flowers. The piece of turf, with the little daisy in it, was  thrown out on the dusty highway. Nobody thought of the flower which had felt so  much for the bird and had so greatly desired to comfort it.

Based on the extract, write a dialogue of about 8-10 sentences between the  two boys after they see the dead bird.

Answers:-

Ist boy : Alas! This pretty lark is dead.

IInd boy : Do you think it is because we put it in a cage?

Ist boy : Yes, I think so. Also, there was not even a drop of water in its  bowl. How could we have been so careless? IInd boy : Yes, we were indeed careless. What can we do now? Ist boy : We will give it a nice burial.

IInd boy : We will keep flowers around the grave.

Ist boy : Shall we get another bird for the cage?

IInd boy : No, I don’t think so. I think it is wrong to cage birds. Ist boy : What about this piece of turf? There was a pretty little   flower on it. But that too is now dead.

IInd boy : Oh, we have indeed been very wicked and cruel.
